As Nigerians celebrate the new year, President Muhammadu Buhari addressed the nation early on Friday, January 1, 2021.

The President reiterated the promises he had made to Nigerians in his speech, affirming that the year 2020 was a tough one. In his remarks, President Buhari promised that his government would revive the Nigerian economy and fight corruption.

He also pledged to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

Below is a highlight of the most things President Buhari said in his news year speech.

1. Promises to end insecurity

The president stressed that he will reform the security situation in 2021.

According to him, the military and police will be stepped up to crack down on terrorists inside and outside the country.

2. Reaffirm his commitment to Nigeria youths.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the five promises he made to Nigeria’s youth as a result of the #EndSARS protests.

He said his government had listened to the needs of Nigeria’s youth.

3. The Nigerian economy

President Buhari in his address urged Nigerians to remain calm as it would revive the country’s economy by shifting our attention from oil to agriculture for food security.

He explained that the government was working to create jobs for the youth and help small businesses.

4. Fight corruption

He added that Nigeria had made a progress in the fight against corruption and in the new year his government would eradicate corruption.

5. Corona Pandemic

President Buhari outlined his administration’s efforts to procure the coronavirus vaccine for Nigerians.

According to him, the government has vowed to protect the country from the second outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
